Seismic Swarm S20130317.1: Analysis of Activity near Cold Springs, Nevada
Seismic swarm S20130317.1 occurred 8 km SSW of Cold Springs, Nevada, beginning at 14:31 on 17 March 2013 and concluding at 09:14 on 19 March 2013. Over 42 hours and 42 minutes, the sequence produced 135 earthquakes. Examination of the first 100 events reveals predominantly low-magnitude activity, with values ranging from -0.2 to 2.5. Depths clustered between 2 km and 13 km, showing a shallow crustal focus typical of the region. The sequence opened with several events below magnitude 1.0, followed by a notable 2.5 event at 14:50 on 17 March. Subsequent activity remained mostly below magnitude 1.0, punctuated by occasional events reaching 1.6. Depths showed minor deepening trends in later stages, extending toward 11–13 km before returning to shallower levels. This swarm aligns with the established pattern of episodic seismic clusters in western Nevada. Historical records since 2000 indicate 14 prior swarms in the area, distributed across 2004 (1 swarm), 2005 (1), 2008 (6), 2010 (1), 2011 (1), 2012 (2), and 2013 (2). Such recurrence underscores the persistent tectonic stress release along local fault systems. The Cold Springs area lies within the Basin and Range Province, characterized by extensional tectonics and normal faulting. Western Nevada experiences distributed deformation linked to the Walker Lane shear zone, which accommodates a portion of Pacific–North American plate motion. This setting produces frequent small-magnitude earthquakes and occasional swarms, often without a single dominant mainshock. Depths observed in the 2013 sequence fall within the typical 0–15 km range for crustal events in this province. No damage or felt reports of significance accompanied the swarm, consistent with its low energy release. Continued monitoring remains essential given the region's seismic productivity.
