Seismic Swarm S20211016.1: Analysis of Activity Near Mina, Nevada
Seismic swarm S20211016.1 occurred approximately 30 km south-southeast of Mina, Nevada, in Mineral County. The sequence began at 03:41 UTC on 15 October 2021 and concluded at 11:28 UTC on 22 October 2021, spanning 175 hours and 46 minutes. During this period, 86 earthquakes were recorded.
The swarm featured a range of magnitudes, with the largest event reaching 3.7 on 15 October at a depth of 9 km. Most events registered below magnitude 2.0, including numerous micro-earthquakes between 0.3 and 1.8. Depths clustered primarily between 7 and 12 km, though a few outliers extended from 0 km to 16 km. Activity showed a typical swarm pattern, with an initial peak on the first day followed by a gradual decline over the subsequent week.
This event aligns with the region's established pattern of swarm seismicity. Since 2000, 22 swarms have been documented in the area. Notable prior activity includes two swarms each in 2003 and 2013, twelve in 2020, and six in 2021. Such recurrent sequences reflect ongoing tectonic processes rather than isolated mainshock-aftershock sequences.
The Mina region lies within the western Basin and Range Province, specifically along the Walker Lane shear zone. This zone accommodates a portion of the dextral shear between the Pacific and North American plates, resulting in distributed normal and strike-slip faulting. The crust here experiences active extension, with numerous Quaternary faults contributing to moderate seismicity. Historical records indicate that the area has hosted similar swarm activity linked to fluid migration and fault interactions within this transtensional regime.
Geological mapping shows the local bedrock consists of Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary units overlying Mesozoic basement rocks. The combination of high heat flow and fractured crust in the Great Basin facilitates the swarm-type behavior observed in S20211016.1 and previous episodes.
